AAASP – American Association of Adapted Sports Programs
This program’s mission is to create adapted sports programs in local communities where opportunities haven’t existed for youth with physical disabilities to participate in competitive sports. AAASP works with local schools, parks and recreation departments, YMCA/YWCA’s, hospitals, parents and other agencies and groups to create year-round sports programs for school-aged children whose primary disability is physical or visual impairment. Competitive teams in various metro areas around the state include wheelchair soccer, wheelchair basketball, cheerleading, beep baseball and goal ball (for children with visual impairments), track and field, and swimming. Most team competitions are fall through spring. Call now to sign up for the fall.

Adaptive Learning Center
This program is a year-round therapeutic preschool for kids with developmental delays and physical disabilities, autism, and medical/genetic diagnoses. The summer program at ALC is designed to meet the recreational and therapeutic needs of children in a camp environment. Occupational, physical and speech therapy can be provided along with weekly special events.

ALTA Foundation Wheelchair Instructional Clinics
This free tennis program is specifically for kids and adults who use wheelchairs. Instructors include current wheelchair players, tennis professionals, and adult volunteers. The program runs Saturdays, 2pm – 4pm, in the spring and fall. Next sessions are September 8 – October 27, 2001.

Atlanta Botanical Gardens 2001 Environmental Summer Day Camp
Day camps run June 18-August 3, with each age group having a separate week. The camp serves children age 4-12 with mild disabilities and is wheelchair accessible. Half-day sessions (9am to 12 noon) for 4-6 year olds are $80-90; full day sessions (9 am to 4 pm) are $150-165. Introduction to rainforests, deserts, bogs, wetlands, “bee’s eye” view of how plants grow. Older campers make firecrackers out of river cane, dye fabric with berry juice, gnaw on bark and munch on insects.

BlazeSports
BlazeSports is an official program of the U.S. Disabled Athletes Fund, Inc. (USDAF). BlazeSports offers community-based sports training and competition for children and adults with physical disabilities. Several spaces are still available in the upcoming BlazeCamp – A Wheelchair Sports Camp for youth ages 8-18 who are independent in activities of daily living (ADL). Both a 7-day camp (June 17 – June 23) and a 3-day camp (June 17 – June 20) are available. BlazeCamp staff features highly successful athletes and coaches who have been selected as much for their personal qualities – and their ability to serve as positive role models for the campers – as for their athletic accomplishments. Callanwolde Summer Arts Camp
Day camp assisting students to discover their creative abilities. Wheelchair accessible. Camps run June 12-August 9, depending on ages. Available for ages 4-12. Cost for day camps range from $125 to $130, and hours vary.

Camp ASCCA – Easter Seals
World’s largest camp for people with disabilities. For people six years old through adults,
Summer camps include:
July 15-20 for people with physical disabilities, ages 15-21;
July 29-August 3 for people with physical disabilities ages 6-14;
August 5-10 for people with mental disabilities, ages 6-21; and
August 12-17 for Buddy Camp for people with physical disabilities – 22+
The camp is at Lake Martin in Dadeville, Alabama, and preference is given to Alabama residents. The fee is $515 per session, but some people in Georgia have been able to get scholarships through Georgia Easter Seals. Activities at summer camp include rope courses, water skiing, swimming, riding, archery, sports, games, and canoeing. Adaptations are made to disability. Each December a trip to Disney World is scheduled. APPLY EARLY. Applications for those on mailing list are sent out in January/February.

Camp Challenge – Easter Seal
Camping, fellowship and fun in an outdoor environment. This is Florida’s Easter Seal Camp. Ages served are 6-99, co-ed. Three two-week sessions grouped according to age and one one-week session (children only) are planned each year. $750 for twelve-day session and $400 for 6-day session.

Camp Dream – Georgia Jaycees
This overnight camp is held at the Center for Therapeutic Recreation at Warm Springs. For children with disabilities ages 8-18, this camp provides one-on-one counselors. This year’s camp is June 28 through July 1, 2001. Outdoor activities include fishing, swimming, small boat sailing, hiking, various sports, horseback riding, campfires and others. Indoor activities include swimming, indoor track, and bowling, as well as use of an indoor gym. Funded through Jaycee sponsors in child’s local area.

Camp Funshine
10 week summer camp running June 4 to August 10. Enrichment activities include indoor and outdoor games, field trips, nature walks, community involvement, and arts and crafts for kids 6 years to 22 years old with physical and mental disabilities.

Camp Ginger Cascades
This girl’s camp is an informal outdoor educational experience with an emphasis on leadership skills and environmental education. Girls ages are 6 to 16. Fees are $125 – $250 for five one-week sessions for 3-6 days. General and specialized program includes swimming, arts and crafts, horseback riding, cookouts, backpacking, climbing, white-water rafting, and trips.

Camp Glisson
Year-round retreat and summer camp program for persons with mild physical and mental disabilities, ages 10-20+. Ranges from $324 for one-week session. Owned and operated by the United Methodist Churches of North Georgia conference.

Camp Kingfisher
Nature and environmental education at Chattahoochee Nature Center. Not specifically for children with disabilities, but they will accommodate on an individual basis if possible; building and wetland trails are accessible. Activities include nature hikes, animal demonstrations, arts and crafts, canoeing (weekly), and swimming (daily). Monday-Friday 9 am to 4 pm, June 4 – August 3. Children can register for two-week sessions with no cost extended childcare. Fees from $320 to $480.

Camp Mountaineer – Challenger Foundation
Special needs day camp including field trips and music. Ages 5 and up. Fee $175 per week, June to August.

Center for Puppetry Arts
Focus is on puppetry: theater, museum, and educational workshops. Beginning in June, the Center offers a variety of workshops and camps. Ages served are Pre-K through 12th grade. The Center attempts to serve all populations. Fees vary according to program.

Challenger Little League
Little League division for boys and girls with special needs, ages 5-18 or completion of high school. A slightly modified baseball game for children with all types of disabilities. Each player is paired with a buddy, usually 11 or 12 years old and from a Little League team. No fee. Many locations, especially in Metro Atlanta.

Chastain Horse Park
Therapeutic horseback riding and equine activities for children and adults with cognitive, physical or emotional disabilities. Serves Metro Atlanta, ages 4-60+. Children 2-4 years old need physician’s order and therapist involvement. Fee: $50 per lesson, but full and partial scholarships available.

CORRAL – Coweta Organization for Riding Rehabilitation and Learning
NARHA-certified center provides recreational riding for children with physical and mental disabilities. All clients need a medical evaluation and an evaluation by a program staff. Ages 4 through young adult. Every other Saturday. Waiting list.

Dynamo Swim Center
Public facility offers swim lessons for ages 3 to adult, all types of disabilities. The swim program is called Swim America and is a progressive learn-to-swim program aimed at teaching proficiency in the four competitive strokes, with an emphasis on safety. Recreational swimming also offered at two pools, one on Shallowford Road in Chamblee (770-451-3272) and the other in Alpharetta in Abbots Kids Village (770-772-6007).

Easter Seals Camp Lindahl
Residential camp for children and adults with developmental and physical disabilities. Traditional summer camp located in Mt. Juliet, Tennessee, four hours northwest of Atlanta. Activities include arts and crafts, canoeing, swimming, fishing, boating, etc. For ages 6-85, June 3 – August 3, 2001. Fee is $425 per week.

Excellence in Therapy Aquatic Therapy Program
Provide aquatic therapy for individuals and small groups (OT and PT). Programs are year-round. One-on-one or small groups, 30 minute sessions. Serving Macon area and Metro Atlanta (Chamblee, Alpharetta, Marietta). Small fees paid to Dynamo and YWCA, some group rates, insurance and/or Medicaid filed.

FOCUS Summer Day Camp: “Camp Hollywood: Where Everyone’s a Star”
Families of Children Under Stress conducts six campsites in the following counties: Gwinnett, Rockdale, North Fulton, Cobb, Henry, and DeKalb. Children with all types of disabilities and their siblings from ages 3 to 21 are served. Activities include arts, crafts, music and snacks. Children need snack lunch. Georgia Ensemble Theater and Conservatory
This theater arts summer day camp consists of three 2-week sessions which meet in a creative atmosphere. Roswell Auditorium is completely wheelchair accessible for youth with mobility disabilities. Young actors must be capable of caring for their own physical needs, must have the ability to concentrate and have good memorization skills. Sessions one and two are in Acting, Theater Games, Character Development, Scene Study, Makeup, Vocal Technique, Musical Theater, Dance, Fencing, Stage Combat, Puppetry, and Technical Theater. The third session is a performance camp for students who have previously studied with GET. Students put together a performance in two short weeks.

High Museum of Art Young Masters Art Camp
Creative activities to promote intellectual growth and art appreciation. Wheelchair accessible. Mild disabilities. Please call the museum. They will make every effort to accommodate all children. Program includes folk art, basic drawing, painting, found-object assemblages, portrait drawings, still-life drawings. Camps are in June and July, 8 one-week sessions. Full day camp is 10 am – 4 pm for ages 6-15, at $155 to $170. Half-day camp is 10 am – 12 pm for ages 3-5, at $75 to $85.

Horizons Circus Camp
Activities include circus performing and visual arts, low trapeze, juggling, magic, clowning, mime, music, theater and art. Kid Komedy – Stand-Up Comedy for Kids
Stand-up and skit comedy. Not specifically geared toward children with disabilities, but can accommodate children with physical disabilities, mild learning disabilities, ADD and ADHD. Kids learn how to write jokes, delivery and timing, the magic of props, and all about the old classic masters of comedy. Great self-esteem booster, excellent as training in public speaking, and it’s REALLY FUN! Ages 7-12, located in Roswell, East Cobb, Midtown in metro Atlanta. Monday-Friday 9am to 12 noon, with weekend “Graduation Show” live on stage. Afternoon general interest camp can be added at some locations.

Lakeshore Foundation
The Lakeshore Foundation, located on a 45 acre campus of wooded property in Homewood, Alabama, provides sports and educational opportunities for adults and children with physical disabilities. Lekotek Summer Computer Camp
An excellent opportunity for children with disabilities to use a computer “play” environment with their brothers and sisters. For any child with a disability, ages 4-9 and 10-15. Four one-week sessions in July, Monday through Thursday. Morning sessions 9:30 am to 12 noon. Afternoon sessions are 1:30 pm to 4:00 pm. Fees $125 per session with sibling and $100 per session for child with disabilities only.

Making Dreams Come True
Horseback riding for children and adults with disabilities. Fun recreational program for all disabilities. Every other Wednesday, starting in April, 11-5 pm, thirty-minute sessions. NHS – Atlanta, A Chapter of Disabled Sports/USA
Skiing trips each year to Beech Mountain, N.C., for beginners and experienced skiers. Registration begins in August. Trip is scheduled for the Tuesday through Friday following Martin Luther King, Jr. Federal Holiday. For ages 6-87 years, any physical disability. Performing Arts North
Creating a theatrical-musical experience from paper to production. Children write, produce, and perform a mini-musical by the end of the week – geared to capabilities of the group. Open to all children ages 5-14. Staff is experienced with children with learning disabilities, ADD, and general disabilities. Wheelchair accessible. ProMotion Fitness Center
Swim classes/lessons. ProMotion offers a variety of classes, programs and special events. Serves infants to adults with physical disabilities and mild to moderate intellectual disabilities. Adventures in the outdoors. Each camp is geared toward different skill levels. For all youth with disabilities, ages 10-17. Activities include rock climbing, canoeing, rafting, mountain biking, backpacking, low ropes, mountain biking, caving. Located in Bluff City, Tennessee. Robert D. Fowler YMCA
Adapted swimming program for children and adolescents with some swimming ability. Serves the physically challenged, ages 8-15. Program offers a 2:1 ratio, with one extra instructor who floats among groups to give individualized instruction. Ramp entrance to pool; equipment such as flotation devices provided. Rockdale Youth Baseball Association – Miracle League
Located in Conyers at the Field of Dreams, to provide an opportunity for people with disabilities to play baseball. Buddy player provided for each player. For ages 5-18 or still of public school age. Fee: $35 includes hat, jersey, and trophy. One game a week on Saturday for eight (8) weeks.

SciTrek
Hands-on Science summer day camp offering hands-on science, math and technology activities, creative play, and fun exploration. Themes include Forensics Lab, Inventors’ Studio, and Expedition. The Georgia Aviation Camp will give hands-on experiences while learning about the scientific principles behind flight and related topics like weather and navigation. Wheelchair accessible. Attendant welcome if needed by camper. Camps not staffed for children with learning disabilities, ADHD, or behavior disorders. Ages 5-12 for SciTrek camps, ages 9-12 for Aviation camps. Shepherd Center Sport Teams
The Shepherd Center Sport Teams provide athletic opportunities to people with disabilities in the Atlanta Metropolitan area. The teams offer regular practice sessions, expert instruction and camaraderie. Funded through the donations of Shepherd Center’s Junior Committee, the sports teams are able to compete on a local, regional, national and international level. Teams compete in water skiing, fencing, air rifle and air pistol shooting, swimming, basketball, track, and power soccer. Admission to teams based on try-outs. Ages 17 and older in most cases, but some exceptions are made for younger experienced juniors in track. Fees: None.

S.P.A.R.X.
This summer day program is exclusively for children/teens with spina bifida and is located at and sponsored by the Shepherd Center in Atlanta. It consists of one- or two-week day camps with a focus on independent living skills, social and recreational skills, self/health care, problem solving, mobility, and community integration. Ages: 5 or 6 to 18, varies each year. Fee: To be announced. Limited scholarships available.

Spruill Center for the Arts
A creative and exciting environment where children will explore their artistic creativity. Wheelchair accessible. Emphasis is on artistic growth, learning and fun. Provides guidance for children in learning age-appropriate techniques in the visual or performing arts. Five 2-week sessions, July 4 through August 10, Monday through Friday, 9:30 am – 2:30 pm. Summer Safari, Zoo Atlanta
Children experience the joy and wonder of wildlife. Inclusive camp for children who use wheelchairs, have learning disabilities, ADHD, ADD, and Down Syndrome. Topics include Paws, Jaws and Claws, Georgia’s Jungle, and Beastly Business. For ages 4 through 7th Grade. Eleven (11) one-week sessions from June 4 to August 17, 2001. Full camp 9 am to 4 pm. Half day camp 9 am to 12 noon or 1 pm to 4 pm. Full day: $180 members; $215 non-members. Half day: $100 members to $120 non-members.

Swim Atlanta
American Red Cross swimming and water safety. Some facilities have large lap pool, and some have a smaller therapy pool. For children and adults with mental and physical disabilities. Most students are mainstreamed, but all are considered on an individual basis, and private lessons are available. Open year-round Monday through Thursday, 9 am to 8 pm, Friday 9 am to 3 pm. Serves Cobb, DeKalb, Gwinnett, Forsyth, and North Fulton Counties. Ages 6 months to adult. Fees: $75 for two-week session for group lessons. Lap swimming and recreational swim, $3.50. $30 for half hour private lessons.

YMCA of Cobb County – Marietta Center
Adapted aquatics, indoor heated pool, services from instructors; various rehabilitative aquatics classes; stroke clinics; exercise programs. Private lessons can be arranged. Excellence in Therapy is held Wednesdays for children and adults with special needs. Dance classes and aikido and karate, self-defense classes for women 15 and over. Call for information on upcoming classes. Serves all ages, all geographic areas. Fees are moderate and scholarships are available as needed.
